Section 158 of MV Act 1988 :-  Production of certain certificates, licence and permit in certain cases -- (1) Any person driving a motor vehicle in any public place shall, on being so required by a police officer in uniform authorised in this behalf by the State Government, produce--

(a) the certificate of insurance;

(b) the certificate of registration;

(c) the pollution under control certificate;

(d) the driving licence;

(e) in the case of a transport vehicle, also the certificate of fitness referred to in section 56, and the permit; and

(f) any certificate or authorisation of exemption that has been granted under this Act, relating to the use of the vehicle.

(2) Where, owing to the presence of a motor vehicle in a public place, an accident occurs involving death or bodily injury to another person, if the driver of the vehicle does not at that time produce the required certificate, driving licence and permit referred to in sub-section (1) to a police officer, he or the owner shall produce the said certificates, licence and permit at the police station at which the driver makes the report required by section 134.

(3) No person shall be liable to conviction for offences under sub-section (1) or sub-section (2) by reason of the failure to produce the required certificate if, within seven days from the date on which its production was required under subsection (1), or as the case may be, from the date of occurrence of the accident, he produces the certificate at such police station as may have been specified by him to the police officer who required its production or, as the case may be, to the police officer at the site of the accident or to the officer-in-charge of the police station at which he reported the accident :

Provided that except to such extent and with such modifications as may be prescribed, the provisions of this sub-section shall not apply to the driver of a transport vehicle.

(4) The owner of a motor vehicle shall give such information as he may be required by or on behalf of a police officer empowered in this behalf by the State Government for the purpose of determining whether the vehicle was or was not being driven in contravention of section 146 and on any occasion when the driver was required under this section to produce the certificate of insurance.

(5) In this section, the expression “produce the certificate of insurance” means production for examination the relevant certificate of insurance or such other evidence as may be prescribed to prove that the vehicle was not being driven in contravention of section 146.

मोटर यान अधिनियम, 1988 की धारा 158 का विवरण :  -   कतिपय मामलों में कतिपय प्रमाणपत्रों, अनुज्ञप्ति और अनुज्ञापत्र का पेश किया जाना -- (1) ऐसा व्यक्ति जो किसी सार्वजनिक स्थान पर मोटरयान चला रहा है, वर्दीधारी पुलिस अधिकारी जो इस निमित्त राज्य सरकार द्वारा प्राधिकृत किया गया है, द्वारा अपेक्षा किए जाने पर वाहन के उपयोग के संबंध में निम्नलिखित पेश करेगा--

(क) बीमा प्रमाणपत्र;

(ख) रजिस्ट्रीकरण प्रमाणपत्र;

(ग) प्रदूषण नियंत्रण के अधीन होने का प्रमाणपत्र;

(घ) चालन अनुज्ञप्ति;

(ङ) परिवहन यान की दशा में, धारा 56 में निदिष्ट उपयुक्तता प्रमाणपत्र और अनुज्ञापत्र भी; और

(च) इस अधिनियम के अधीन प्रदत्त किया जा सकने वाला कोई भी प्रमाणपत्र या छूट का प्राधिकार ।

(2) जहां सार्वजनिक स्थान पर मोटर यान की उपस्थिति के कारण दुर्घटना घटित होती है जिसके कारण किसी अन्य व्यक्ति की मृत्यु या शारीरिक क्षति होती है, यदि यान का चालक उस समय अपेक्षित प्रमाणपत्र, चालन अनुज्ञप्ति और उपधारा (1) में निर्दिष्ट अनुज्ञापत्र पुलिस अधिकारी को पेश नहीं करता तो वह या स्वामी उक्त प्रमाणपत्र, अनुज्ञप्ति और अनुज्ञापत्र पुलिस थाने में जिसमें चालक रिपोर्ट करता है, पेश करेगा।

(3) कोई व्यक्ति उपधारा (1) या उपधारा (2) के अधीन अपेक्षित प्रमाणपत्र पेश किए जाने में असफलता के कारण, अपराधों के लिए दोषसिद्ध किए जाने के दायी नहीं होगा यदि, वह, यथास्थिति, उपधारा (1) के अधीन पेश किए जाने के लिए अपेक्षित तारीख से या दुर्घटना के घटित होने की तारीख से सात दिनों के भीतर, पुलिस अधिकारी जिसके द्वारा उसका पेश किया जाना अपेक्षित है, द्वारा उसको विनिर्दिष्ट किए गए पुलिस थाने में या जैसा भी मामला हो, दुर्घटना के स्थान पर पुलिस अधिकारी से या उस पुलिस थाने के प्रभारी अधिकारी को जहां उसने दुर्घटना की रिपोर्ट की है, प्रमाणपत्र पेश करता है :

परंतु ऐसे विस्तार के साथ और ऐसे उपांतरण के साथ जैसा विहित किया जाए, इस उपधारा के उपबंध किसी परिवहन यान के चालक को लागू नहीं होंगे ।

(4) मोटरयान का स्वामी, राज्य सरकार द्वारा इस निमित्त सशक्त किये गए पुलिस अधिकारी द्वारा या उसकी ओर से अपेक्षित सूचना यह अवधारित करने के प्रयोजन के लिए कि क्या यान धारा 146 के उल्लंघन में चलाया या नहीं चलाया जा रहा था और किसी अन्य अवसर पर जब चालक से इस खंड के अधीन बीमा प्रमाणपत्र पेश किए जाने की अपेक्षा की जाए, देगा ।

(5) इस धारा में “बीमा के प्रमाणपत्र को पेश करना'' अभिव्यक्ति से बीमा के सुसंगत प्रमाणपत्र या ऐसे अन्य साक्ष्य, जो इस बात को साबित करने के लिए विहित किया जाए कि यान धारा 146 के उल्लंघन में नहीं चलाया जा रहा था, को परीक्षा के लिए पेश किया जाना अभिप्रेत है ।
