Section 55 of IPC 1860:-“Offence” –Commutation of sentence of imprisonment for life -
In every case in which sentence of imprisonment for life shall have been passed, the appropriate Government may, without the consent of the offender, commute the punishment for imprisonment of either description for a term not exceeding fourteen years.

आईपीसी, 1860 (भारतीय दंड संहिता) की धारा 55 का विवरण - आजीवन कारावास के दण्डादेश का लघुकरण -
हर मामले में, जिसमें आजीवन कारावास का दण्डादेश दिया गया हो, अपराधी की सम्मति के बिना भी समुचित सरकार उस दण्ड को ऐसी अवधि के लिए, जो चौदह वर्ष से अधिक न हो, दोनों में से किसी भांति के कारावास में लघुकृत कर सकेगी।
