Section 54 of IPC 1860:-“Offence” –Commutation of sentence of death -

In every case in which sentence of death shall have been passed, the appropriate Government may, without the consent of the offender, commute the punishment for any other punishment provided by this Code.

हर मामले में, जिसमें मृत्यु का दण्डादेश दिया गया हो, उस दण्ड को अपराधी की सम्मति के बिना भी समुचित सरकार इस संहिता द्वारा उपबंधित किसी अन्य दण्ड में लघुकृत कर सकेगी।
